Jim Duggan Title History
The roots of patriotism in professional wrestling date back to the founding years of the sport, yet none are so memoeravle as this man; draping Old Glory over his shoulder and waving a two-by-four in the air and charismatically chanting “USA” “USA” “USA” this can only be in reference to one man, and that man is of course, the legendary patriot of the professional wrestling world, Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan made history in the year of 1988 by becoming the first man to ever win what become many annual World Wrestling Federation Royal Rumble matches. Despite his victory, Hacksaw has never won a world heavyweight championship in either of the two major professional wrestling organizations he has wrestled in during the course of his career, those of course being the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling.
Despite his ongoing popularity and ability to get the crowd going, Hacksaw stayed primarily in the midcard ranks in both the WCW and the WWF being a prominent target to put over the younger talents in the company and being involved as a Hero character whenever a major star was down, the most noticeable being his real-life friend, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, who would play a huge part in the career of Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and vice versa.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan made the jump to WCW in the year of 1995 along with his friend Hulk Hogan as well as many other former WWF talents who liked the sound of the money that Ted Turner was offering them. Others included Macho Man Randy Savage, Big Bossman Ray Traylor, The Earthquake and as time progressed, many, many more, including the most infamous duo in professional wrestling history, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall.
Hacksaw was one of the original men involved with the company at the time the legendary Monday Night Wars started between the WCW and the WWF and he remained with the WCW until late 2000 when he was took off television. His last major angle was actually turning heel, a poorly-planned and ill-received turn, throwing down the American Flag and joining Team Canada in WCW. This was short lived however, because everyone knew Hacksaw was a true patriot at heart, and it was not long before he returned draping the red white and blue. This was one of the many failed Heel turns from the brain of Vince Russo which also included Bill Goldberg.
Hacksaw remained inactive in the pro wrestling business until around 2005 and 2006 when he was bought in to the WWE for a one time deal, but ended up impressing officials and was so much of an instant crowd favorite that they decided to keep him around. He recently turned 54 years of age and is still going strong, wrestling on WWE’s RAW brand, often on the WWE Heat show.
I have been a fan of Hacksaw my entire life, and for those who doubt his wrestling talents, watch his EARLY stuff, pre-WWF, and you will be eating your tongue from the talent that this man has.
