Hurricane Helms Title History
He might not be able to leap tall buildings or outrun a locomotive, but when it comes to entertaining thousands of people inside a wrestling ring, Hurricane Helms is a superhero. He was born Gregory Shane Helms on July 12, 1974 and started his wrestling career on the independent circuit, capturing many different cruiserweight and light heavyweight championships along his way to the big leagues.
Wrestling in OMEGA, Shane Helms was a two time tag team champion with his partner Mike Maverick. Together they were The Serial Thrillaz. The Thrillaz first title reign with the company came on December 5, 1997 and ended when Matt and Jeff Hardy took the titles from them in July. Helms and Maverick regained the belts in January of 1999 from the Hardy Boyz. The Serial Thrillaz also held tag straps working for Southeast Championship Wrestling.
Helms received his first big break when he came to World Championship Wrestling and formed a boy band group called 3 count alongside Shannon Moore and Evan Karagias. Together they would come out to the ring and before their match they would sing and dance, which usually ended up getting interrupted by their opponents. Even though they couldn’t sing or dance that well, 3 count could wrestle.
The three of them pinned Brian Knobbs for the WCW Hardcore title on February 28, 2000 and were all aloud to defend it. Together they held the belt until Uncensored the following month, when Knobbs won the title back.
Shane Helms split away from the group and went out on his own under the new name of “Sugar” Shane Helms. He found success in the Cruiserweight division when he finally beat Chavo Guerrero for the title in March 2001 at the Greed Pay Per View. He held onto the belt until WCW was bought out by their rival Vince McMahon and the WWE.
Helms was one out of twenty five guys who got their contracts bought with the company and came to work for the WWE. Upon arriving at the WWE, Helms dropped the Sugar Shane name and went by his real name of Gregory Helms. On the July 5, 2001 episode of Smackdown, Helms lost his belt to a fellow member of The Alliance in Billy Kidman. At the end of that month Helms once again changed his name, this time to a superhero named Hurricane Helms. He came to the ring dressed like a superhero with cape and all and believed himself to have superpowers. One of which was the power to choke slam other superstars which more often than not failed him.
In August, The Hurricane rescued his first title in the WWE from his old nemesis Matt Hardy, when he took his European Championship. He held the title for nearly two months before Bradshaw defeated the superhero.
At the end of 2005 Helms dropped the superhero gimmick and went back to being himself, Gregory Helms. When he did he won the Cruiserweight title for a third time and became held the belt for a record setting 385 days. He defended the belt against every cruiserweight in the company, but none of them were able to take it from him, until No Way Out 2007. Chavo Guerrero beat him for the strap in an eight man cruiserweight open match also involving Daivari, Shannon Moore, Jamie Noble, Jimmy Wang Yang, and Scottie 2 Hotty.
On May 18, 2007 Helms’s career was brought to a screeching halt when it was reported that he had suffered two broken vertebrae in his neck, one of which was pressing on his spinal cord. He had surgery a week later to fix the problem and let him come back to the ring.
September 19, 2008 Hurricane Helms appeared on a short video promo called “Hurripops”. He would tease and taunt the bad guys in the company. He made his in ring return on December 5 on an episode of Smackdown by defeating Montel Vontavious Porter.
So what is next for Hurricane Helms, I am not sure, but I have a feeling that he could really step up to main event status, now that there isn’t a cruiserweight division. He has proved to me that he can hang with the big guys and look good doing it. So look out WWE, there is a storm coming through.
