Edge Title History
You think that you know him? You think that you know how the most controversial man in wrestling today works. Edge has become one of the most watched and talked about superstars on television, and for good reason.
He was born Adam Joseph Copeland on October 30, 1973 in Orangeville, Ontario Canada. Growing up he watched wrestling idealizing guys like, Mr. Perfect, Hulk Hogan, and Shawn Michaels. Through the 1990′s he wrestled on the independent circuit in Ontario and The Great Lakes as Sexton Hardcastle.
Before the great tag team of Edge and Christian was born in the WWE, it was Hardcastle and Joe Legend wrestling as the team of Sex And Violence. In 1997 Sex And Violence hooked up with Christian Cage, Rhino Richards, and Bloody Bill Skullion to form the stable known as Thug Life.
Edge came to the WWE on June 22, 1998 when he made his debut on Raw. He was a loner who came to the ring through the crowd. A couple of months later he made his Pay Per View debut at Summerslam as the mystery partner for Sable. Together they defeated Marc Mero and Jacqueline after Sable pinned Mero.
He won the Intercontinental Championship for the first time by beating Jeff Jarrett on a non televised show in Toronto, Ontario. He dropped the title back to Jarrett the next night at the Fully Loaded Pay Per View.
A few months later along with his on camera “brother” Christian and knew accomplice Gangrel, they formed The Brood. They were a gothic group who held ritual bloodbaths on unlucky WWE Superstars. The Brood eventually joined forces with an even unholier faction in the WWE known as The Ministry Of Darkness, that was led by The Undertaker. They left the Ministry in May of 1999 after Christian was punished for telling Ken Shamrock where Stephanie McMahon was being held captive by Taker.
Gangrel soon turned on Edge and Christian and teamed up with their arch enemies, the Hardy Boyz to form The New Brood. Edge and Christian continued to feud with The Brood throughout the rest of the year and had some of the best tag team matches in the history of the business.
Towards the end of 2001 Christian turned on Edge. He was jealous of Edge winning the King Of The Ring title in June and then the IC Title again in August. They feuded for a few months and had some outstanding matches including a cage match.
At the Survivor Series Edge defeated Test to unify the United States Championship and the IC Title.
Shortly after Wrestlemania the following year Edge was drafted to Smackdown in the first ever Draft Lottery. He feuded with Kurt Angle upon arriving on that brand which culminated in Angle losing a hair vs. hair match, and being shaved bald.
In February of 2003 Edge suffered a very serious neck injury which kept him out for a year. When he came back, he was drafted back to Raw and on April 19, 2004, Chris Benoit and him won the World Tag Team Championships.
2005 was a year of first for Edge. He was in the first ever Elimination Chamber match and was the first one to be eliminated. But he won the first ever Money In The Bank Ladder Match at Wrestlemania which gave him a title shot whenever he wanted. He also began a controversial affair with Amy Dumas, better known as Lita. She was in a serious relationship with Matt Hardy at the time. This wasn’t just a storyline that the WWE cooked up to draw ratings, it happened outside of the ring. At the WWE Homecoming show Edge beat Matt in a loser leaves Raw ladder match, sending Matt over to Smackdown.
When New Years Revolution rolled around Edge decided to cash in his Money In The Bank contract and challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship. Edge beat him in less than two minutes after hitting two spears on the champ. of course Cena had just defended his title in an Elimination Chamber Match, minutes before. This not only marked Edge’s first WWE Championship win, but he also became the 14th Triple Crown winner.
The next night on Raw to celebrate his victory, Lita and him held a live sex celebration. The segment earned Raw a 5.2 rating and was the highest rated Raw in over a year. This gave Edge something else to brag about.
He lost his precious title back to John Cena at the Royal Rumble a few weeks later. On July 3, 2006, he won the title back by defeating Cena and Rob Van Dam in a Triple Threat Match. This was the first time that the WWE Title has changed hands on Raw since October 8, 2001.
A year later he defeated Mr. Kennedy to win the Money In The Bank Contract and cashed it in four days later on Smackdown. He beat The Undertaker, who was just in a cage match against Batista, to win the World Championship for the first time.
He was forced to relinquish the title on July 20, 2007 due to a torn left pectorial muscle. Edge came back with a furry at the Survivor Series when he interfered in the Hell In A Cell match between The Undertaker and Batista.
At One Night Stand on June 1, 2008 Edge beat The Undertaker for the vacant World Championship forcing Taker to leave the WWE forever due to a pre match stipulation.
So what is next for the Rated-R superstar? If he can stay healthy, I think that Edge can and will be one of the greatest superstars to ever lace up a pair of wrestling boots.
