  • No man has ever earned the nickname of the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be, like Bret “The Hitman” Hart. He was one of the greatest technical wrestlers in the history of the business.

Bret Sergiant Hart was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Stu and Helen Hart. He enrolled in Mount Royal College in hopes of becoming a director. But he ended up following in his fathers footsteps and went to work for his Stampede Wrestling. With his brother Keith Hart he was a four time Tag Team Champion there. He also held numerous other title for Stampede.

Hart made his WWF Television debut in August of 1984 in a tag team match with the Dynamite Kid. In 1985 he formed The Hart Foundation with his brother In Law Jim Neidhart. They both made their Wrestlemania debuts at the second Wrestlemania in a twenty man battle royal that Andre The Giant went on to win.

The Hart Foundation got their first taste of championship gold win they won the WWF Tag Team Titles on January 26, 1987 by defeating the British Bulldogs. They kept the titles until the end of October when they lost them to Strike Force. The Foundation didn’t regain them until August 27, 1990 when they beat Demolition in a two out of three falls match at Summerslam.

The Excellence Of Execution won his first singles titles by defeating Mr. Perfect at Summerslam in 1991. He dropped the belt to The Mountie, but beat Roddy Piper for the belt at Wrestlemania VIII. Bret lost the strap to his Brother In Law Davey Boy Smith at Summerslam 92.

Bret won the most prestigious title in all of wrestling by winning the WWF Championship on October 12, 1992 by defeating the legendary Ric Flair.

Wrestlemania 13 was Bret’s last Wrestlemania where he beat Steve Austin in a violent Submission Match. A bloody Austin passed out in Hart’s Sharpshooter and guest referee Ken Shamrock stopped the match, rewarding it to Bret.

He won his fifth and final WWF World Championship by defeating The Undertaker at Summerslam on August 3, 1997 when special guest referee Shawn Michaels accidently hit Taker in the head with a steel chair. Due to a pre match stipulation stating that if Michaels did not call the match fairly, he would never be allowed to wrestle in the United States again.

Bret’s reign as champ wouldn’t last long though. On November 9, 1997 he lost the belt to Shawn Michaels in what has become known as the Montreal Screwjob. Bret was leaving the WWF for their rival WCW and

Vince McMahon was afraid that Hart would take the belt and throw it in the trash. Bret was suppose to win the match by DQ so he wouldn’t have to lose it in Canada and then drop it a few weeks later. McMahon agreed to do it that way but at the end of the match when Shawn had him in his own Sharpshooter Vince called for the bell giving the belt to Michaels. Bret went on a rampage after the match was over and spit in Vince’s face and then punched him in the locker room.

Bret Hart then went to WCW making his wrestling debut at the Souled Out Pay Per View by defeating Ric Flair.

He won his first of four United States Championships by beating Diamond Dallas Page for the vacant title on Monday Nitro on July 20, 1998.

Bret won a 32 man tournament on November 21, 1999 to win the vacant WCW Championship for the first time by defeating Chris Benoit in the finals. He forfeited the title on the December 20 edition of Nitro but won it back in the main event by defeating Bill Goldberg. He vacated the belt on January 15, 2000 due to a concussion suffered at the hands of Goldberg.

Hart suffered a severe stroke on June 23, 2002 but since has recovered. He was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame by the man that he beat in his last Wrestlemania match, Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Bret hart for all that he has accomplished in this business is the best there ever was, and the best there ever will be.
